Using the Admin Toolbar (Top Bar)

Using the Admin Toolbar (Top Bar)

The Admin Toolbar is the dark bar that appears at the top of your screen when you are logged into WordPress. It provides quick access to important tools and shortcuts.

This toolbar is only visible to logged-in users. Visitors to your website do not see it.

Understanding how to use the Admin Toolbar can save time and make editing much easier.

Where the Admin Toolbar Appears

You will see the Admin Toolbar:

  • At the top of the Dashboard

  • At the top of your live website while logged in

This means you can navigate and edit without constantly returning to the Dashboard.

Key Sections of the Admin Toolbar

While the exact options may vary depending on your website, most WordPress toolbars include the following elements.

Site Name (View Site)

On the left side, you will see your website’s name.

Clicking it allows you to:

  • View the live website

  • Switch between the Dashboard and the front end

This is one of the most commonly used shortcuts.

Updates

If updates are available for:

  • Plugins

  • Themes

  • WordPress itself

You may see a notification icon here.

Most users should not run updates unless instructed.

Comments

If your site allows comments, you may see a speech bubble icon showing the number of pending comments.

Clicking it takes you directly to comment moderation.

+ New (Create New Content)

The “+ New” option lets you quickly create:

  • A new Post

  • A new Page

  • Media uploads

  • Other custom content types (depending on your site)

This is a fast way to start creating content without navigating through the left menu.

Edit Page (When Viewing the Site)

When you are viewing a live page while logged in, you will see an “Edit Page” or “Edit Post” button in the toolbar.

Clicking this takes you directly into the editor for that page.

This is one of the most useful features of the Admin Toolbar.

Instead of searching through the Pages list, you can:

  1. Visit the page

  2. Click Edit Page

  3. Make changes

  4. Update

  5. Click View Page again

This workflow is very efficient.

Your Profile (Top Right Corner)

On the far right side, you will see your username.

Hovering over it gives you options to:

  • Edit your profile

  • Log out

Always log out if you are using a shared or public computer.

Why the Admin Toolbar Is Helpful

The toolbar reduces the number of clicks required to:

  • Create content

  • Edit pages

  • Switch between editing and viewing

  • Access profile settings

Once you get comfortable using it, it becomes one of the most convenient parts of WordPress.

When the Toolbar Does Not Appear

If you do not see the Admin Toolbar:

  • Make sure you are logged in

  • Check your user profile settings

  • Confirm you are not viewing the site in a private browser window where you are logged out

In your profile settings, there is an option to show or hide the toolbar when viewing the site.

Best Practices for Using the Toolbar

Use Edit Page from the live site

This ensures you are editing the correct page.

Avoid using update notifications unless authorized

Updates can affect site functionality.

Log out when finished

Especially on shared devices.

A Simple Workflow Using the Admin Toolbar

A common editing workflow looks like this:

  1. Log in

  2. Click “View Site”

  3. Navigate to the page you want to update

  4. Click “Edit Page”

  5. Make changes

  6. Click “Update”

  7. Click “View Page” to confirm changes

This process keeps editing simple and organized.
