How to Log In to Your WordPress Website

How to Log In to Your WordPress Website

Logging into WordPress gives you access to your website’s control panel, called the Dashboard. From there, you can create and edit pages, upload images, and manage content.

This guide will walk you through logging in safely and troubleshooting common issues.

Step 1: Go to the Login Page

Most WordPress websites use one of these login URLs:

Info
yourwebsite.com/wp-admin

or

Info
yourwebsite.com/wp-login.php

Replace yourwebsite.com with your actual website address’ domain.

If the login page does not load, make sure:

  • You are typing the correct domain name

  • You are using HTTPS (secure connection)

  • There are no extra spaces in the URL

Step 2: Enter Your Username and Password

On the login screen, you will see two fields:

  • Username or Email Address

  • Password

Enter your credentials and click Log In. If your information is correct, you will be taken directly to the WordPress Dashboard.

Understanding the Login Screen

The login screen is simple and usually includes:

  • Username field

  • Password field

  • “Remember Me” checkbox

  • “Lost your password?” link

Should You Use “Remember Me”?

You can check Remember Me if:

  • You are on a private computer

  • You are not using a shared device

  • You are comfortable staying logged in

Do not use “Remember Me” on public or shared computers.

What You See After Logging In

Once logged in successfully, you will see:

  • The WordPress Dashboard

  • A menu on the left side

  • The admin toolbar at the top

You are now in the administrative area of your website. Visitors to your website do not see this area.

What If You Forgot Your Password?

If you cannot log in:

  1. Click Lost your password?

  2. Enter your username or email address

  3. Click Get New Password

  4. Check your email inbox

  5. Click the reset link

You will be able to create a new password.

If You Don’t Receive the Email

If no reset email arrives:

  • Check your spam or junk folder

  • Wait a few minutes

  • Confirm you entered the correct email address

If it still does not arrive, contact your site administrator or hosting provider.

Common Login Errors and What They Mean

“Incorrect Password”

This usually means:

  • Caps Lock is on

  • You entered the wrong password

  • You are using the wrong username

Try resetting your password.

“Too Many Login Attempts”

Our websites limit login attempts for security.

If you see this:

  • Wait a few minutes

  • Try again

  • Contact your administrator if locked out

“Your Account Is Disabled”

If you receive this message, your user account may:

  • Have been deactivated

  • Have an expired role

  • Be restricted by a security plugin

Contact us for assistance getting your account unlocked.

Security Tips for Logging In

To keep your website secure:

  • Use a strong password (12+ characters recommended)

  • Do not share login credentials by email

  • Log out when finished (especially on shared computers)

  • Avoid logging in on public Wi-Fi when possible

If your organization uses two-factor authentication (2FA), follow the additional verification step after entering your password.

How to Log Out

To log out:

  1. Hover over your username in the top-right corner

  2. Click Log Out

This ends your session safely.

Bookmarking the Login Page

To save time, you can:

  • Bookmark the login URL in your browser

  • Save it in a secure password manager

  • Add it to your browser’s favorites

This prevents typing errors and speeds up access.

Summary

To log in to WordPress:

  1. Go to yourwebsite.com/wp-admin

  2. Enter your username and password

  3. Click Log In

  4. You will be taken to the Dashboard

If you forget your password, use the reset link on the login page.

Logging in is the first step to managing your website safely and confidently.
