Editing an existing page is one of the most common tasks in WordPress. Whether you’re updating text, replacing an image, or adding new content, the process is straightforward once you understand the steps.
This guide explains how to safely locate, edit, and update a page without disrupting your site.
There are two main ways to find the page you want to edit.
Option 1: From the Dashboard
Click Pages in the left-hand menu.
Click All Pages.
Use the search box in the top right if needed.
Click the page title.
Option 2: From the Live Website
While logged in, visit the page on the live site.
Click Edit Page in the Admin Toolbar at the top.
This second method is often faster and ensures you are editing the correct page.
Once inside the editor, review:
The page title
The URL (slug)
The content blocks
The page layout (if applicable)
Before making changes, scroll through the entire page so you understand its structure.
To edit text:
Click inside the paragraph block.
Make your changes.
Review for spelling and grammar.
Avoid copying and pasting directly from Microsoft Word without cleaning formatting, as this can introduce unwanted styling.
If pasting text:
Use “Paste as plain text” when possible.
Review formatting after pasting.
To change a heading:
Click the heading block.
Update the text.
Confirm the heading level is appropriate (H2, H3, etc.).
Avoid using large bold text instead of proper heading blocks.
To replace an image:
Click the image block.
Click Replace.
Upload a new image or select one from the Media Library.
To edit image details:
Click the image.
Review alignment and sizing.
Update alt text if needed.
Do not delete images from the Media Library unless you are certain they are not used elsewhere.
To add content:
Click the plus (+) icon.
Choose the appropriate block.
Insert and format as needed.
Common additions include:
Paragraph text
Images
Lists
Buttons
Headings
Add content thoughtfully to maintain layout consistency.
On the right-hand panel, check:
Status (Published, Draft)
Visibility (Public, Private)
Parent page (if applicable)
Featured image (if used by your theme)
Avoid changing the URL slug unless necessary. Changing the slug can break existing links.
Before saving:
Click Preview.
Review layout and spacing.
Check mobile view if available.
Test any updated links.
Previewing prevents accidental formatting issues.
When ready:
Click Update.
Wait for the confirmation message.
Your changes are now live immediately.
WordPress saves revisions.
To restore a previous version:
Look for the Revisions section.
Compare versions.
Restore the desired version.
This provides a safety net while editing.
